The region R, shown shaded in the diagram, is bounded by the straight line with equation y = 2x + 1, the x-axis and the lines x = 0 and x = 3. Work out the area of region R.

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.
- M1 for method to find y-coordinates at x = 0 and x = 3 (y = 1 and y = 7)
- M1 (dep) for correct formula for area of trapezium or for splitting into a rectangle and a triangle
- M1 for a correct calculation for area, e.g. 0.5 × (1 + 7) × 3 or (1 × 3) + (0.5 × 3 × 6)
- A1 for 12
