This question is about the properties of ethanol. Ethanol is a liquid at room temperature. [Figure 5 shows the apparatus used to determine the boiling point of ethanol. Figure 6 shows the displayed formula of two isomers.]

  1. (a)(i)Describe how the apparatus shown in Figure 5 should be used to determine the boiling point of ethanol.[3]
  2. (a)(ii)Suggest a modification to the apparatus shown in Figure 5 to prevent the ethanol from catching fire during heating.[1]
  3. (b)(i)Ethanol can be oxidised to ethanoic acid. State the name of the chemical that can be used to oxidise ethanol to ethanoic acid.[1]
  4. (b)(ii)Give the formula of ethanoic acid.[1]
  5. (c)(i)Ethanoic acid reacts with ethanol to form an ester. State the name of the ester formed when ethanoic acid reacts with ethanol.[1]
  6. (c)(ii)State the name of the catalyst used for this reaction.[1]
  7. (d)(i)Figure 6 shows the displayed formula of two isomers. State what is meant by the term isomers.[1]
  8. (d)(ii)Name Isomer 1.[1]
  9. (d)(iii)Explain why Isomer 1 and Isomer 2 are isomers of each other.[1]

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. M1 for (a)(i) heat (water in beaker) / use Bunsen burner
  2. A1 for (a)(i) (record temperature when) ethanol boils / bubbles / stays constant
  3. A1 for (a)(i) (read) thermometer (Allow 'heat bath' / 'water bath' instead of 'beaker of water')
  4. B1 for (a)(ii) (use an) electric heater / water bath / oil bath / sand bath / mantle heater / hot plate / (use a) condenser / make sure there are no naked flames / remove Bunsen burner
  5. B1 for (b)(i) acidified potassium dichromate(VI) / acidified K₂Cr₂O₇
  6. B1 for (b)(ii) CH₃COOH
  7. B1 for (c)(i) ethyl ethanoate
  8. B1 for (c)(ii) (concentrated) sulfuric acid / H₂SO₄
  9. B1 for (d)(i) same molecular formula / same number of atoms of each element / same atoms in each molecule AND different displayed / structural / skeletal formula / arrangement of atoms
  10. B1 for (d)(ii) butan-1-ol / 1-butanol
  11. B1 for (d)(iii) same molecular formula (C₄H₁₀O) but different displayed formula / structural formula / position of OH group
