Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. 12(a) B1: xylem (1)
  2. 12(b) M1: root hair cells have a lower water potential than soil (water) (1)
  3. M1: water moves by osmosis (1)
  4. A1: across a partially permeable membrane (into the root hair cell) (1)
  5. 12(c) M1: water evaporates from the leaves (through stomata) (1)
  6. M1: creates a transpiration pull / tension / suction (1)
  7. A1: water molecules cohere / stick together / form a continuous column (due to hydrogen bonding) (1)
