Solve, for 0 ≤ x < 360°, the equation 3 tan x = 5 sin x.

Mark scheme

Marking points from the official mark scheme. The mark or mark type is shown in brackets.

  1. M1 for using tan x = sin x / cos x to get 3 sin x / cos x = 5 sin x.
  2. M1 for collecting terms on one side and factorising sin x (e.g., sin x (3/cos x - 5) = 0).
  3. A1 for correctly stating sin x = 0 or 3/cos x - 5 = 0 (or 3 = 5 cos x).
  4. B1 for sin x = 0 => x = 0°, 180°.
  5. M1 for solving 3 = 5 cos x to get cos x = 3/5.
  6. A1 for basic angle 53.1° (awrt 1 dp).
  7. A1 for x = 53.1°, 306.9° (awrt 1 dp, and no extra solutions in the range).
